What is FENSA?

FENSA is a government-authorised scheme that monitors building regulation compliance for replacement windows and doors. Each FENSA Approved Installer, from large national brands to small local companies, is assessed regularly by us to ensure its compliance to building regulations is continually maintained.

What FENSA does

FENSA’s mission is to improve window and door replacements across England and Wales, by professionalising installers and protecting homeowners.

We make sure the work complies with building regulations, is energy efficient, and registered with the local council. And verify that every FENSA Approved Installer’s guarantee is insured.

A brief history of FENSA

  • Debut for FENSA

In April 2002, the UK government authorised the creation of FENSA (Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme). The first and most well-known Competent Person Scheme for the window and door installation industry in England and Wales.

  • The FENSA Certificate

Since 2002, FENSA has been authorised by the government to issue the renowned FENSA certificate: proof that your window and door installations are compliant, energy efficient, and registered. This proof is vital when selling your home. When you use a FENSA Approved Installer, rather than having to arrange an inspection from your Local Building Control Officer, the team at FENSA notify them for you – and you get a certificate to prove it.

  • On the move

Just seven years later, FENSA was proving so popular the group relocated its premises as it had grown significantly.

  • Expansion by popular demand

By October 2016, FENSA had to move again for the same reason. FENSA was proving extremely popular.

  • 13 million certificates issued

Over 13 million of our certificates have been issued. That’s 50% of all UK homes covered by FENSA.
